The moment I walked into the veterinary clinic, I stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted Mikey and Georgia through the surgery window, their arms wrapped around Trace. He was squatting down next to them, hugging them right back. And that’s when it hit me—hard. Trace is my guy. He’s our guy.

My kids have known nothing but a good life, which is what I’ve worked hard to give them. I’ve dedicated my life to their happiness so they would never feel their father’s abandonment any more than they had to. For Georgia, she has never met him, so to her, her brother and I are her entire world. For Mikey, as a boy growing into a man, he’s starting to feel it, and I can see that in the way he gravitates towards Max and the other Cooper men in town. Honestly, they’re all fine, strong examples of what and who a good man should be, and seeing Trace be so nurturing and caring to my kids is yet another sign that he’s of the same ilk.

Mikey and Georgia are already so accepting of Trace. Granted, they might not understand exactly the kind of relationship we might be working toward—the one I promised Trace I would keep my mind and heart open to—but it can’t have been missed by at least Mikey that Trace and I are closer than I am with any other of the men in their lives.

Maybe this is more of the mountain’s influence. I’ve seen my female friends fall for Trace’s older brothers one by one, and each new love match has had a purpose. One look at the wonky smile Georgia shoots Trace before she takes Lucy’s hand is enough to tell me she’s smitten with Trace too. My heart swells, my stomach flips, and I’m surprised I haven’t melted into a puddle of goo all over the vet clinic floor. I think the mountain is giving Trace to all of us.

Emotion grips me and I step to the side, out of the line of sight so I can calm myself down before Mikey and Georgia are out here with me. I know now that I want this. I want the happy family Trace seems to be offering me. It would be so easy to fall into him and never come back out again. But I’m nervous. It’s been a long time since I’ve been intimate with a man. It’s like I’m a virgin all over again. I’m not entirely sure what to do.

The surgery doors swing open, and I take a quick breath and step into the open to greet my kids. As soon as Georgia spots me, she lets go of Lucy’s hand and runs straight for me.

“Mommy!” She slams her little body straight into my thighs and starts crying. “I don’t want Justice to be hurt!”

“I know, baby. But Trace is going to make him all better, right? We trust Trace.” She nods, and I slide my arms around Mikey’s shoulders as he leans up against me too.
